On 3 September, Monaco will commemorate the anniversary of the liberation of the Principality during the Second World War. This year’s celebrations will be particularly special.
A special tribute will be paid to General Robert T. Frederick. The Principality provided financial assistance for the erection of the bronze statue, which was unveiled on 14 August in La Motte, Var. A postage stamp depicting the General was issued in Monaco on 15 August. The commemoration will be attended by the military man’s descendant, grandson Bradford Hicks.
There will be a ceremony at the Maison de France at 9:30 a.m. in the presence of the French ambassador. At 17:00 in Monaco Cemetery, in front of the monument to those who died in the world conflicts of the twentieth century, a military ceremony will take place in the presence of Prince Albert II and the first persons of the state. Honours will be paid to both Monegasque, French and American military personnel.
At 18:00, the procession will lay flowers at the memorial plaque on the façade of the National Council dedicated to Monegasque resistance fighters René Borghini and officer Esther Poggio, shot on 15 August 1944. Next, the Prince will inaugurate a thematic exhibition in the hall of the Public Ministry. The exhibition, entitled ‘Monaco Liberated!’ will be open to the public from 3 September until 31 January 2025.
