The Sportel Awards ceremony returns to the Grimaldi Forum from 27 to 29 October. Last Thursday, the organisers revealed the name of the winner of the ‘2024 Legend Award’. The prestigious award will be presented to handball great Nikola Karabatic.
Every year, Sportel Awards honour the best international athletes. Thus, commemorative trophies were awarded to Didier Deschamps (in 2018), Alain Prost (in 2019), German figure skater Katharina Witt (in 2023).
At the sunset of his career, at the age of 40, the award will be the logical conclusion of 23 years of competition filled with glory and medals. Nikola Karabatic is credited with six Olympic Games, including the last one in Paris, 364 matches for the French national team and 1,303 goals. The statistics make him the fourth most prolific player and the second highest scorer in the history of the French team after Jerome Fernandez (1463 goals).
